We now spotlight Ian Geikie of Cape Elizabeth. Ian was the 2018 Class B Giant Slalom State Champion. He helped his team win the Class B Alpine title and he also was the WMC giant slalom champion. We asked him about his preparations and his goals for next year.
1. What were your preparations leading up to the state meet ? I Always keep my skis very sharp and the correct wax on them depending on the temperature. All the boys were playing Fortnite the night before the race. Finally a healthy breakfast and lunch.
2. How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet? I wasn’t nervous before or during the race because I was with my friends and I was having a great time.
3.What was going through your mind at the starting gate knowing about the conditions and knowing that you could win? I knew I was prepared because I have been training all year and the years prior. The course looked fun, the only downside of the day is it was really warm so the snow was hard to get an edge in.
4. You were the WMC giant slalom champ and the Class B Giant Slalom State Champion, what do you contribute your great slalom success to? I've always liked GS more, I try to focus on my form when I am skiing SL. When I am training I always listen to my coaches and try to adjust to what they are saying.
5. What are some of your favorite things about alpine skiing? I love alpine skiing so much because that feeling when you get into the finish corral after a great run is amazing. I also love training with my friends at sugarloaf because its really funny at times but also serious at Times.
6. What are your plans/goals for next year?My Goals for next year are exactly the same as this year, Win WMC Sl and GS, win States SL and GS. I am trying to improve my SL skiing. I will need to keep trainging and focusing on my goals.
7. What was your reaction when you found out that your team won the Class B Alpine? All the boys were stoking, we worked hard all year and it payed off. We had a very strong team this year and are hoping to be even stronger next year.
