Portland senior Brad Ravenelle was the Class A Classical Runner-Up but cruised through the 5K course at Titcomb and won the Class A Freestyle race.  We caught up with Brad and asked him about his reaction to winning and his plan for next year.

1/ What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

We were able to preview the course a few days before, which was very beneficial.  Otherwise, it was just another race and my routine was the same as ever.

2) How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?

I just tried to trust in the training I had done over the last eight months and go in with the confidence that I was a contender and deserved to have these expectations on my shoulders.  I was also lucky to have not one but two great teams, who’s members never let me take myself too seriously.

 3) What is your favorite thing about ski racing?

I love the community.  It is rare that one can find such camaraderie between not only teammates but also opponents at the finish line.  Good day or bad day, win or lose, you won't find a better group of folks anywhere.

 4) Coming into the season, what were your goals and did you achieve them?

I wanted to win a state championship and ski on the Eastern Cup circuit, both of which I achieved.  I also wanted to contribute to my team and do for the younger athletes this year what those whom I looked up to did for me.

 5) What was your reaction when you found out that you won the freestyle race?

It was a little surreal, to be honest.  Had you told me my freshman year that I would one day stand on top of the podium, I would have laughed at you.  It was a long process and  it was fun to see all the time I invested paying off.

 6) What are your plans for next year?

I plan to attend Bates College and continue my ski career, possibly after taking a Post-Graduate year to continue chasing the ski racing dream.
