We now spotlight Devon Lathrop of Cape Elizabeth, the Class A Giant Slalom state champion.  We asked him about his favorite thing about ski racing and his goals for the season.

1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

I also race USSA, so I train and compete each weekend and vacations with CVA at Sugarloaf.

2) How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet

I didn’t feel any pressure because as a freshman, I didn’t have any expectations of winning. I felt that a top 10 finish was achievable.

3) What is your favorite thing about ski racing?

I like to go fast and love the adrenaline rush. You just can’t get that from recreational skiing (without a ski patroller taking your pass).

4) Coming into the season, what were your goals and did you achieve them?

Having never raced high school, I wasn’t sure how serious they sport was taken so I didn’t have any goals to chase.

5) What was going through your mind at the starting gate?

Honestly, I remember that I simply wanted to stay on my feet and finish. I mentally revisited the tough parts of the course while I was waiting to be released.
