We will now spotlight state champion senior Jack Borland of Deering. He was the 2026 Class A classical state champion, the freestyle
state champion, and the pursuit state champion. We asked him about his state meet preparations and dealing with the state meet pressure.
1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?
My team and I had been tapering for states for about a week and a half out. We did this by decreasing our weekly volume and intensity. This paired with a few final workouts had me feeling very fresh and in shape for states
2) How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?
There’s always intense emotion and pressure at a state meet. Thankfully, my background as a soccer goalie has prepared me for those moments. Being the last line of defense taught me how to stay calm under pressure, allowing me to manage my nerves effectively both on the soccer field and up at Fort Kent.
3) What was going through your mind at the start?
At the start line, I just try to clear my head and focus on the race ahead.
4) What do you contribute your success to?
I think I have my coaches to attribute my success to, they not only prepare us fast skis, but helped boost my confidence when I wasn’t feeling super ready to race my best.
5) What are your goals/plans for next year?
Next year I’m going to be attending Dartmouth College, where I might join the club team.
6) What surprised you the most about this season?
I was most surprised by how consistent the weather was. We were able to ski for essentially the entire season with great conditions.
7) What moment/event will you remember the most from the season?
I think that I will remember the time spent with my teammates at team dinners laughing and having a great time.
8) What do you like most about Nordic Skiing?
My favorite part about Nordic Skiing is the downhills
9) Anything else that you would like to add?
Thanks again to my coaches for making me into the skier I am today.
