2018 State Champion Spotlight-Gaelan Boyle-Wight

Our next spotlight is Gaelan Boyle-Wight of Telstar.  He won the Class C Classical at Fort Kent and also won the MVC Classical.  We asked him about his preparations, his favorite memories, and more.

1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

In the long-term, my preparations leading up to the state meet were quite general, and training proceeded as normal. The short-term consists of the week leading up to the races. I was excited, but also nervous. By telling myself to stay cool and focus on my own health I was able to stay in a relaxed mode. Until the day of the races, of course. Besides that, I just focused on eating a lot of peanut butter.

We now spotlight Sophia Laukli of Yarmouth who was the Class B Classical and Freestyle state champion.  She also won the WMCs, the Sassi Memorial, and was on the New England team at Junior Nationals where she received All-American status.  We asked her about being at Junior Nationals and her season successes.

1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet ?
For my training, I focused on shorter and easier workouts with some intensity to make sure I was well rested for the races. I went up early with the team to make sure I was familiar with the courses as well.

2018 State Champion Spotlight-Emily Carty

We next spotlight Emily Carty of Fryeburg Academy who was the Class A Freestyle state champion.  She also helped her team win the Class A Nordic title.  We asked her about winning the title and her preparations.

1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet ?

All season I worked on my endurance and technique because I was aiming to win states. In the weeks leading up to states my biggest fear was that I would get sick, so I used an insane amount of hand sanitizer. Besides that, I just did the usual workouts with my team. We did a lot of hills because Rumford is known for the killer hills.

2018 State Champion Spotlight-Niko Naranja

Our next state champion spotlight is Niko Naranja of Fort Kent.  Niko won the Class C Freestyle and helped his team win the Class C Nordic title.  We asked him about his team winning and his thoughts at the start line.

1. What were your preparations leading up to the state meet ?

We were very fortunate to have states at home this years, so preparing for the race was very easy. It was the same course that we had raced all year, and many years before that, so I knew the course as easily as I knew my own name.

2018 State Champion Spotlight-Max Bartley

We now spotlight state champion Max Bartley of Presque Isle.  He won the Class B Classical and was also the Aroostook classical and freestyle champion.  We asked him about his preparations and his success.

1.What were your preparations leading up to the state meet ? There was obviously a lot of training involved. This included a lot of running over the summer as well as roller skiing. I run cross country during the fall, this gives me a good cardio base as well as build some speed. I am very fortunate to live in a place that has some of the best skiing in the state, with a world class facility in my backyard so a lot of time on snow helped. Going into the week of the state meet we tapered training down, allowing my body to recover. I was well rested going into the week and was confident in the training I had put in.
