Killian Lathrop-State Champion Spotlight

We next spotlight junior Killian Lathrop of Cape Elizabeth High School.  He was the 2019 Class B Slalom state champion and his team won the Class BKillian Alpine title.  We asked him about his season and his favorite moment.

1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet? Preparing for the state meet was no different than any other race. I trained up at Sugarloaf with my CVA weekend program team the day before, then just tried eat well and hydrate, and the day of the race I just stretched before my run and did some free ski laps.

2) How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet? I just tried to forget about what I was doing and just fool around and hang with my friends and go for some free ski runs. Then just show up to my run stretch a little then get in the gate.

3) What was going through your mind at the starting gate in the pursuit knowing that you could win?

I was just thinking about skiing a clean line and to give it to her at the bottom to make up time on the flats.

4) You won the slalom, what makes you so good and what do you contribute your success to?
I contribute my success to my Mother and my Father for driving me to races and to Sugarloaf every weekend in the winter for as long as I can remember. Also my two brothers Devon and Tiernan, and my other buddy’s who I train with up at sugarloaf for always making it a competition and keeping it competitive and fun.

5) As a junior, what are your goals for next year?

It would be really nice to get another win in slalom, and win the giant slalom, and to get a better seed going into easterns.

6) What surprised you the most about this season?
Definitely when I hipped out first run in gs at states and got sixth, then came back second run and finished with a second place right behind my brother Devon.

7) What moment/event will you remember the most from this season?
My favorite moment this season was definitely the tuck run the boys on the Maine team did at High School easterns at Attitash.

8) What do you like most about Alpine skiing? I like the adrenaline from going fast and the feeling you get when you are trying to go faster and faster
