Miguel Sanclemente-State Champion Spotlight

We now spotlight sophomore Miguel Saclemente of Fort Kent.  He was the 2019 Class C classical and freestyle state champion.  We asked him about his Miguelpreparations and his success as a sophomore.

1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?
My preparations consisted of lots of water, sleep, pasta, and wax.
2) How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?
Getting excited and nervous is part of the racing. Once this is acknowledged, it is a matter of channelling that energy into performance.
3) What was going through your mind at the starting gate in the pursuit knowing that you could win?
All I wanted to do is keep the guy behind me off. I tried to stay focused on the small details of racing so as to not be more nervous about the big picture.
4) You won the classical and freestyle, what makes you so good and what do you contribute your success to?
Perseverance and practice combined with great coaching and fast wax resulted in success.
5) As a sophomore, what are your goals for next year?
I would like to place better at the New England level, so, more training. I would also like to motivate my teammates to do the same. As they say, races are won in the off-season.
6) What surprised you the most about this season?
I was surprised at how well our team placed considering we lost 3 of our best skiers last year.
7) What moment/event will you remember the most from this season?
I will remember the course preview at the state championship--skiing with the entire team. We were all laughing and having a great time.
8) Is there anything else that you would like to add?
9) What do you like most about Nordic skiing?
I love everything about it! The comradery, the season, the snow, and the wonderful community of skiers.
