2018 State Champion Spotlight-Shelby Cowin

We next spotlight senior Shelby Cowin of Greenville who won the Class B Slalom and Giant Slalom.  Shelby also won the giant slalom in 2017 and in 2016.  Her success has been fenomenal.  We asked her about the success, her favorite memories and her future plans.

1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

I prepared for the state meet the same as I would prepare for every race. However this year I had to prepare my body for states a lot more than usual. Coming from a serious knee injury last year I really had to push my body to regain strength in order to compete at my best ability.

2)How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?

I didn’t feel much pressure going into the State meet. I always try to take it as just another race. Knowing that it was my last State meet was a definitely hard, but I wanted to finish my high school strong. I wanted to take home the gold in Slalom since I had yet to complete two runs at a Slalom State Championship race. Through all the emotions, I just stayed calm and focused.

3) What was going through your mind at the starting gate knowing about the conditions and knowing you could win?

While I was standing in the start gate I ran the course from start to finish in my head. Remembering where I need to hold my line while putting the conditions into consideration.

4) You won the GS in 2016, 2017 and 2018. You also won the slalom this year at states. What did you contribute your success to?

Winning the Slalom gold medal was a huge accomplishment for me. Through the years I have had trouble carrying my speed through a slalom course to the finish. I have focused this year on finishing each slalom run, even if it meant taking a more conservative line. My constant training and focus on slalom helped me achieve that goal.

5)You are now a senior, what are some of your best memories from the past 4 years?

I have had so many amazing memories in the past four years. However transferring from CVA to Greenville High School for my sophomore year was one I will never forget. I have met so many great friends through Ski Racing. I do think my best, or most exciting memory is receiving the Bronze Medal at Eastern’s my sophomore year.

6)What are your plans for next year?

I plan to attend the University of Maine at Fort Kent for Nursing.

7) Is there anything else that you would like to add?

I would like to give a huge shout out to my couch Rocky Rockwell and the rest of my ski family here in Greenville. I also want to thank my sister Tara and brother in law Isiah for believing in me and supporting me every step of the way. I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without you!

And to all the athletes out there that may experience an injury such as the ACL and Meniscus injury I had last year, don’t ever give up! With enough focus and dedication you can regain strength and be right back at it.
